Diagnostics vs advanced fault diagnosis

Two stages of fault investigation, so you know exactly what you're booking.

Vehicle Diagnostic Scan – The First Step
Stage one

Vehicle Diagnostic Scan – The First Step

  • Connecting diagnostic equipment to the vehicle
  • Scanning electronic control modules
  • Retrieving diagnostic trouble codes
  • Reviewing available live sensor data
  • Examining freeze-frame information
  • Interpreting fault information
  • Identifying areas needing further investigation

A diagnostic scan identifies information recorded by your vehicle's electronic systems. A fault code does not necessarily confirm which component has failed or what repair is required.

Advanced Fault Finding – Identifying the Root Cause
Stage two

Advanced Fault Finding – Identifying the Root Cause

  • Electrical circuit testing
  • Wiring and connector inspections
  • Voltage, resistance and continuity checks
  • Sensor and actuator testing
  • Oscilloscope testing where appropriate
  • Mechanical inspections
  • Component removal or dismantling
  • Investigation of intermittent faults
  • Control module communication testing

Advanced fault diagnosis involves additional technician time and physical testing to establish the cause of a fault. It is separate from an initial diagnostic scan and may involve additional labour charges. We always discuss and get your authorisation before going ahead.

Our diagnostic process

  1. 1

    Enter your registration

Enter your vehicle registration and choose a suitable diagnostic appointment.

  2. 2

    Initial diagnostic assessment

Our technicians connect professional diagnostic equipment and review your vehicle's electronic fault information.

  3. 3

    Further testing where required

If the initial findings don't confirm the cause, we explain the extra investigation needed and get your authorisation first.

  4. 4

    Findings & recommendations

We explain what we found and recommend the right repairs or further investigation.

Diagnostic work and repair work are separate unless specifically agreed. Nothing is repaired without your approval.

Engine Management Light On? Get It Checked in Southampton

The Engine Management Light (EML), also known as the check engine light, comes on when your vehicle's engine management system detects a potential fault. This could relate to emissions, engine performance, fuel delivery, sensors or other electronically monitored systems.

Solid amber light

Usually a detected engine management or emissions fault. The car may still drive, but get it investigated promptly. If serious symptoms appear, stop driving safely.

Flashing light

Can indicate a serious misfire or fault that may cause further damage. Stop driving when safe and arrange professional assistance.

Dashboard warning lights explained

Red warnings such as oil pressure, overheating or brake system faults mean stop driving as soon as it is safe.

Engine Management Light

A fault detected by the engine management system. If it flashes, stop driving safely.

ABS Warning Light

A fault in the anti-lock braking system. Normal brakes usually work, but ABS may not. Get it checked promptly; if the red brake light is also on, stop safely.

Airbag / SRS Warning Light

Airbags or seatbelt pretensioners may not deploy in a collision. Book diagnostics as soon as possible.

DPF Warning Light

The diesel particulate filter is becoming blocked. Ignoring it can lead to costly damage.

Glow Plug Warning Light

If it stays on or flashes after starting, there may be a glow plug or engine fault.

Power Steering Warning

Steering may become heavy. Drive with care and have it checked before continuing your journey; if red, stop safely.

Traction Control / ESP

Flashing briefly is normal when it's working. Staying on means the system may be disabled.

Battery / Charging Light

The charging system may not be working. The car could stop running once the battery drains.

Gearbox / Transmission

A transmission fault has been detected; the car may go into a limited 'limp' mode.

Oil pressure, overheating or red brake light

Do not continue driving. Stop safely, switch off and arrange recovery.

Common car fault codes & what they mean

Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) show which systems have detected abnormal conditions.

CodeMeaning
P0300Random/multiple cylinder misfire detected
P0301Cylinder 1 misfire detected
P0171Fuel system too lean – Bank 1
P0420Catalyst efficiency below threshold – Bank 1
P0401EGR flow insufficient

A fault code is a starting point for diagnosis, not confirmation that a particular component needs replacing.

Understanding vehicle diagnostic charges

An initial vehicle diagnostic assessment involves retrieving and interpreting fault information from the vehicle's electronic systems. Some faults can be identified at this stage, while others need further electrical, mechanical or component testing.

Where advanced fault diagnosis is necessary, we explain the additional investigation and costs before going ahead. Repairs are not included in the diagnostic price.
